Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is an important adjunct to chiropractic care. Members of the traditional medical community often recommend physical therapy. This usually involves some type of exercise or repetitive motions designed to stabilize and strengthen deconditioned muscles and improve mobility. There is no question that physical therapy has its place, especially during the recovery following surgery or after long periods of inactivity. However, if the therapist is unaware of the chiropractic vertebral subluxation and its effects, physical therapy may inappropriately exercise a malfunctioning spinal joint, exacerbating the current condition. Strengthening associated muscles rarely corrects subluxations. Plus, the additional wear and tear can actually make the problem worse! Conversely, correcting subluxations without stabilizing the body and subsequently strengthening the body does not last indefinitely.  That is why chiropractic and physical therapy go hand-in-hand! Other forms of physical therapy may be more passive in nature, such as intersegmental traction, electro-muscle stimulation, ultrasound, cold laser and other devices. Ask if these forms of treatment are appropriate for your particular health problem.

Dr. Alan Asks some important questions of interest to Darien residents - Chiropractor Darien Dr. Alan Asks...

What's the difference between sick care and health care?
Sick care is largely about relieving or suppressing symptoms. Health care is about improving performance. While sick care is about how you feel, health care is about how you function. Sick care is what you do to treat an obvious problem, and health care is what you do to avoid the problem and advance your well-being.
What's the difference between maintenance, prevention and wellness?
Maintenance chiropractic care is an attempt to keep a dynamic, ever-changing and adapting organism (you) in a static relationship with your environment. Preventive chiropractic care is mostly about early detection. Wellness chiropractic care is an attempt to optimize our health and be all that you were designed to be.
